Stories of Impact

“The food we receive helps our family stretch our resources for over two weeks. Produce and milk are very expensive. My mom uses all of the fresh produce to make traditional Indian meals for our family.”

Sonam is a college student, the proud daughter of Indian immigrants and a member of a family of five. Her parents have had some financial challenges recently and are struggling to support their family during this unprecedented time.

“This is a particularly difficult time,” Sonam shares. “My sister and I are preparing for college and my youngest sibling is still in grade school. I was fortunate to secure scholarships to continue my education, but my sister is still hoping to raise enough money to continue her education.”

In an effort to make ends meet, Sonam’s family has relied on food assistance from South Michigan Food Bank. “The food we receive helps our family stretch our resources for over two weeks. Produce and milk are very expensive. My mom uses all of the fresh produce to make traditional Indian meals for our family.” Sonam continues, “Receiving food allows my parents to help with school supplies and clothing. We are very thankful!”
