Volunteer Your Time

Ending hunger requires hands-on help.

To put it simply, the Food Bank couldn't survive without the hands-on help of our volunteers. Thousands of volunteers generously donate their time each year to the fight against hunger.

Volunteer Opportunities
  • At a Pantry

The Food Bank partners with hundreds of pantries across eight South Michigan counties (Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Hillsdale, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lenawee and St. Joseph). If you want to volunteer close to home, and can commit to regular shifts, this may be a great fit for you.

  • In the Office

With 285 partner organizations serving thousands of people across eight counties, there's a lot of organizational and behind-the-scenes work that's required to keep things running smoothly. Let us know if you're interested in putting your administrative skills to good use!

  • At Special Events

South Michigan Food Bank hosts a number of fundraising and outreach events every year. Volunteer support is a critical component of pulling off a successful event.

    Thanksgiving at the Fire Hub
    When: November 28th (Thanksgiving Day)
    Two shifts: 9am-12pm and 12pm-4:30pm

The Fire Hub and Fire Keepers Casino will be preparing a FREE Thanksgiving dinner at the Fire Hub. We are looking for volunteers to serve food and make the holidays special for those receiving a meal.

    Christmas at the Fire Hub
    When: December 16
Time: 1pm-3pm Christmas at the Hub and 4pm-6pm Kendall Street Pantry

The Fire Hub will be having Christmas at the Hub and Kendall Street Pantry. This event will have a toy tent and mitten & hat tent. Kendall Street Pantry will be open, giving away food for holiday meals, including turkeys. Volunteers will give away items during the Christmas give-away and assist shoppers at Kendall Street Pantry. We are expecting about 350 families to attend this event and are in need of volunteer support.

If you're interested in any of the above opportunities, please contact our Volunteer Manager or call (269) 441-4438.

  • At the Distribution Center

Last year, we distributed 5.4 million meals to hungry people in South Michigan. That volume of food requires a lot of hands to sort, pack, and assemble food for delivery to each of our partner programs each week. Working at our warehouse in Battle Creek is a great opportunity for individuals, families, teens, and groups.

Family Matters Day is the third Saturday of each month from 9:00 - 11:00am. This is a great opportunity for those looking to make an impact over the weekend.

Food Bank Friday is the first Friday of the month from 5:00 - 7:00pm. If you're in search of a fun and fulfilling Friday night, then this gig is for you!

Fort Food Pantry is every Tuesday from 2:45pm - 5:15pm. We're in need of friendly volunteers to greet and assist shoppers, and carry groceries to vehicles.

If you're interested in any of the above volunteer opportunities, please contact our Volunteer Manager or call (269) 441-4438.
