At South Michigan Food Bank, we believe that access to food is a fundamental right— and that access should include the kinds of food people know and love. That’s why we’re committed to offering culturally diverse food options for the communities we serve.
SMFB connects with community members and partner agencies to better understand the food preferences and traditions of the diverse populations in our service-area.
We work with a wide network of food suppliers to source a variety of food options. By making strategic purchases or acquiring culturally diverse food donations, we can ensure that we have something for everyone in our community.
Fresh produce is a priority in our distribution efforts because not only does it have high nutritional value, but it’s also a part of every culture. Some other items we purchase include halal protein options, beans, rice, and more. In 2024, we sourced over 220,000 pounds of culturally diverse foods to distribute out to our community.
Our goal is to continue incorporating diversity into our vital work so that when someone visits a pantry or receives a box from SMFB, they see something that feels familiar and comforting. Food is more than just calories— it’s culture. Ensuring access to these foods is a reflection of our values: diversity and treating all with respect, compassion, and dignity. When individuals and families are able to choose foods that align with their culture, it fills both stomachs and hearts.
