In honor of April being Food Rescue Month, we want to shine a light on the importance of reducing food waste and tackling hunger in our community. As millions of pounds of food go to waste each year, countless individuals and families continue to face food insecurity. Food Rescue Month is an opportunity to raise awareness about the impact of rescuing surplus food. At SMFB, we are proud to be part of this vital movement and to celebrate the collective efforts that make a real difference in the fight against hunger and food waste.
What is Food Rescue?
Food rescue is the process of saving food that would otherwise go to waste and redistributing it to those that are facing food insecurity. This food can come from many sources: grocery stores, restaurants, and farms. It can also include donated items from individuals.
Instead of being thrown away, this surplus food is donated to food banks and other community organizations that can distribute it to our neighbors that are experiencing hunger.
Why is Food Rescue Important?
Each year, millions of pounds of food are wasted, while thousands of our neighbors go hungry. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, about 30%-40% of the food supply in Michigan is wasted.
Food rescue helps to bridge this gap by ensuring that every surplus of food is used in the most beneficial way possible. Not only does food rescue help fight hunger, but it also contributes to a more sustainable future. Reducing food waste lowers greenhouse gas emissions, conserves water, and saves valuable resources.
How SMFB is helping
At SMFB, food rescue is an essential part of our mission. Through partnerships with local corporations, such as Target, Meijer, Walmart, Dollar General, Costco, and Sam’s Club, we’re able to rescue surplus food and direct it towards our fight to end hunger. Our dedicated team of drivers, volunteers, and staff work tirelessly to ensure that no good food goes to waste and that everyone has access to nutritious meals.
How You Can Get Involved
There are many ways you can help support Food Rescue Month and make a difference in our community. If you have extra nonperishables, consider donating them! In addition, being mindful of your own habits can help reduce food waste.
Food Rescue Month is a reminder of the collective power we have to reduce food waste and alleviate hunger. As we continue to raise awareness and expand our efforts, we hope to inspire others to join the movement and make a lasting impact.
