The Holidays at South Michigan Food Bank

The holidays at South Michigan Food Bank are always busy – our food distribution partners go above and beyond to provide special items to individuals and families and put food on the tables! Just like every aspect of 2020, this holiday season is different: there are even more people in need, and alongside our dedicated partners, South Michigan Food Bank is responding. In fact, the week before Thanksgiving, we distributed more food than any other week of the year with 471,640 pounds, a 66% increase from our average weekly food distribution.

We work with over 350 food programs that provide food directly to households in need. Over the holidays, we’re able to purchase turkeys and classic holiday foods to help families keep traditions alive at home. These agencies, who run fresh food distributions, food pantries, and soup kitchens, get these foods into the hands who need them.

Join the movement to end hunger! Here’s how you can help put food on the tables:

  • Volunteering
    • Throughout this season, South Michigan Food Bank has so many volunteer opportunities! We are committed to keeping our clients, volunteers, and staff safe as we work together to continue feeding our communities — here’s our COVID policy.
    • During the pandemic, our volunteers have packaged 75% of the food distributed by South Michigan Food Bank; before COVID, this was about 25%. Pack fresh food boxes, repack bulk items, or see your impact directly by handing out food at our drive-thru pantry! Sign up and view all of our projects here.
